Handmade Himalayan incense
VAIRAGYA
Vairagya began with a simple question: if incense is a part of our heartfelt and mindful moments, shouldn’t we care about what goes into making it?

As I looked more closely at modern dhoop, I felt a longing for something closer to nature and more connected to the meaning of these sacred moments. This led me on a journey through the valleys of the Himalayas, where I explored traditional ingredients, visited their sources and spoke with sadhus, monks, yogis, artists, local people and meditation practitioners. Every conversation taught me something new about the place incense holds in our lives.
I tested hundreds of samples, learning patiently along the way, until I came closer to the dhoop I had imagined. Vairagya is born from this journey—a humble coming together of Himalayan botanicals, the handmade Newari rope-incense tradition and a deep respect for the moments in which we use them. My hope is to offer something made with care and intention, for your prayers, your quiet moments and the times you simply wish to pause. Because some moments are too meaningful to be ordinary.
Vairagya is born from the mountains — from the forests of juniper and cedar, the high-altitude meadows where jatamansi grows, and the ancient Newari tradition of handcrafting rope incense.
THE VAIRAGYA STORY
Because some moments are too meaningful to be ordinary.

The Newari people of the Kathmandu Valley are among the great artisan communities of the Himalayan world. Their crafts — metalwork, woodcarving, weaving, and incense-making — carry within them centuries of accumulated knowledge and aesthetic sensibility.
Newari rope incense, or dhoop, is one of the most distinctive expressions of this heritage. Unlike stick or cone incense, rope incense is made by hand-rolling a blend of powdered botanicals into a long, twisted cord. The technique requires skill, patience, and an intimate knowledge of the materials.
Each Vairagya rope is made following this tradition — rolled by hand, one at a time, by artisans who have inherited the craft. There is no machine that can replicate the character of a hand-rolled rope. The slight irregularities, the variations in density, the way the fragrance unfolds as it burns — these are the marks of a human hand.

THE CRAFT

INGREDIENTS
01
Juniper
Juniperus recurva
A sacred Himalayan shrub whose woody, resinous branches have been used in traditional incense-making across the mountain regions for generations.
02
Jatamansi
Nardostachys jatamansi
A rare high-altitude herb with a deep, earthy fragrance, long prized in Himalayan traditions for its grounding aromatic character.
03
Cedar
Cedrus deodara
The Himalayan deodar cedar lends a warm, woody depth to the blend — its resinous heartwood a cornerstone of mountain incense traditions.
04
Pine
Pinus wallichiana
Himalayan blue pine contributes a clean, forest-fresh note, evoking the high-altitude forests where the botanicals are gathered.
05
Camphor
Cinnamomum camphora
A crisp, clarifying element that lifts the blend and has been a part of incense traditions across South and Southeast Asia for centuries.
06
Titepati
Artemisia indica
A bitter, aromatic herb native to the Himalayan foothills, used in Newari ritual and purification practices. Its smoke calms the mind and protects the space it fills.
07
Frankincense
Boswellia sacra
One of the oldest incense resins in the world, frankincense brings a deep, resinous warmth long associated with spiritual practice and meditation.
08
Sandalwood
Santalum album
Prized across the incense traditions of South Asia for its soft, creamy, woody fragrance — sandalwood soothes and centres, leaving a gentle lingering warmth.
09

Nardostachys jatamansi var.
Rich, earthy, and deeply calming, spikenard anchors the blend with a quiet depth that unfolds slowly as the rope burns.
